This week’s Course of the Week is located in China, about 1 hour’s drive away from the city of Kunming in Yunnan Province. The area has a year round spring climate, making it a great destination for golf. The golf club consists of three different courses: Yufeng Ridge (A course), Masters’ Course (B course) and Leaders’ Peak (C course), designed by Arizona based Schmidt-Curley Design, and feature the 270-million year old Stone Forest as a back drop.
The focus of this golf club’s design was to preserve the dramatic rock formations and build the golf courses around the existing landscape. No architectural elements or bunkering were used to distract from the stunning, natural surroundings. Typically, with a multi-course facility, designs would focus on creating layouts with distinct styles, however, all three courses were built very naturally to fit the site; there are subtle differences in each but nothing that jumps out.
The course is rightfully named Stoneforest and you can see why from the photos! Looks like a great challenge!
