This past weekend, Rory McIlroy earned his first victory in 2013 at the Emirates Australian Open and what a final round of golf we were treated to. Australian Adam Scott started the final round with a four shot lead and just 18 holes away from completing the Australian Triple Crown after earning victories at the Australian PGA Championship and the Australian Masters. The world’s number two player (Adam Scott) and number 6 player (Rory McIlroy) traded hay-makers throughout the entire day. Adam Scott had multiple opportunities to stretch his lead and seal the deal however, he was unable to capitalize. This left him up only one shot going into the 18th hole. Unfortunately for Adam, he missed the green long and right, which left him in a tough spot and was only able to salvage bogey.
Rory has been playing well the entire tournament. Perhaps it’s the new 2014 equipment from Nike that was just announced to the public last week! With Adam in a tough spot on the 18th, Rory made the most of this opportunity and birdied the final hole for a two shot swing and spoiling Adam’s attempt at the Australian Triple Crown! As Rory would later say, “Adam is a phenomenal golfer, a great competitor and probably an even better guy and I feel a bit sorry that I was the one that ruined the triple crown for him.” We are sure his first victory in 2013 will ease his pain just a bit!
