Nothing feels like a Mizuno. That’s the tagline that the company uses and its lineup of irons have backed up this claim for many years. Mizuno’s current offering includes the MP-18 irons and the JPX 919 irons, which Brooks Koepka has used to play his way up to the number one ranked player in the world.
This season, Mizuno will release their newest edition of their MP line of irons, MP-20. The MP-20 irons will comprise of three models – the MP-20 muscle back with tapered blade, MP-20 HMB (Hot Metal Blade) and the MP-20 MMC (Multi Material Construction). Mizuno will also have a set of SEL (Special Edition Leftie) irons available, combining the MP-20 HMB 3 and 4 iron with blades from 5-PW. This will be the first time lefties will have access to a Mizuno blade since the MP-68 model (launched in September 2009).

The MP-20 irons were first revealed in the week of the Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club. Aside from the patented grain flow forging from Mizuno, the MP-20s will see a reintroduction of copper underlay, just under the iron’s chrome plating. This copper underlay was initially used to adhere the chrome plating to the forged steel. However, testing suggested that Mizuno’s legendary feel was in part due to this copper underlay.
Due to this discovery, Mizuno re-initiated this process with its domestic Mizuno Professional line in 2017 and now, it has made its way into the MP-20 irons. The copper underlay was last seen in the MP-29, MP-14 and the legendary TN87. Although each model of MP-20 irons work very well on its own, Mizuno has designed the irons to have the ability to mix and match for a perfect combo set. Among the three models, Mizuno has taken clubhead size, CG location, forgiveness and trajectory into account so that a combo set will blend in seamlessly with each other.

Although you may think a muscle back blade would not have any new technology, Mizuno actually made adjustments to the taper of the upper portion of the blade. In the longer irons, the taper is parallel to the face of the club, which allows the mass to be lower for a higher ball flight. In the short irons, the angle kicks out on the taper, which results in a higher centre of gravity and a more penetrating ball flight.
The MMC (Multi Material Construction) model features titanium that’s forged directly into a stainless steel head. The fit of the two metals is assembled using its different contraction rates. In previous generations of the MMC, all the irons would have a single piece of titanium whether it’s a long iron or a short iron. This was not ideal as the angle of each iron is different hence, affecting the ball flight. In the MP-20 MMC, by investing in extra tooling molds, Mizuno was able to forge an unique piece of titanium into each iron, allowing for a better flow through the set and a more desirable ball flight in its long and short irons.
The HMB (Hot Metal Blade) is a brand new model of the Mizuno MP lineup and is completely different from what Mizuno has done before. Because it’s a part of the MP line, the HMB has to look the part, meaning it has to have a thin and sleek look at address, a narrow sole and a clean look from behind to blend in with the other MP models. The face and neck of the irons are forged from Chromoly, the same material used in two of Mizuno’s best selling models ever in the JPX 919 Hot Metal and Hot Metal Pro. This allows Mizuno to go thin on the face and achieve the iron’s great feel through grain flow forging. Two tungsten weight are also added on the toe and heel of the HMB irons. All this adds to a forgiveness in the HMB irons that despite not looking out of place in the MP line, will perform significantly different on the launch monitor.
In the video above, we hear from Chris Voshall, Brand & Product Manager of Mizuno USA as he visited Ian Fraser of TXG (Tour Experience Golf) in Toronto, to talk more about Mizuno’s newest line of MP irons. Chris’ passion for the clubs really come across in the discussion and for any golf enthusiast, it’s a must watch! The Mizuno MP-20 irons and T20 wedges will available for custom fitting from the 5th of September.
