At the 2016 Wyndham Championship, it would be the young, rising star Si Woo Kim who claimed his maiden PGA TOUR victory. He gad a phenomenal week at the Donald Ross-designed course at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., shooting rounds of 68-60-64-67 for a five-shot victory over Luke Donald and six-shot victory over Hideki Matsuyama and Brandt Snedeker.
His total of 21-under par at Sedgefield ties the 72-hole record set eight years ago by Carl Pettersson. He also set a tournament record with a 60 in the second round of the championship (nearly a 59!). Kim became the youngest winner on the PGA TOUR this season, and the second-youngest in tournament history; Seve Ballesteros was 20 when he won here in 1978. Kim also became the eighth player from South Korea to win on the PGA TOUR — they’ve combined for 18 victories — and the second to do so in Greensboro, joining 2005 winner K.J. Choi. You can bet he’ll be trying to keep up this great play and form into the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Kim come close to a win once before, losing to Aaron Baddeley in a playoff last month in Alabama in the Barbasol Championship. But perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised at his success. At 17, Kim earned his PGA TOUR card through Q school in 2012, but was unable to play full time until after his 18th birthday at the end of June in 2013. Therefore, he spent the majority of the next three seasons on the Web.com Tour, breaking through with a win at the 2015 Stonebrae Classic.
He would win that event at 20 years and 21 days old, become the second-youngest winner on the Web.com Tour – the youngest was Jason Day at 19 years and seven months old at the 2007 Legend Financial Group Classic. Now, in his first full season on the PGA TOUR, he’s notched 13 top-25 finishes in 30 starts, making 20 cuts – not bad!
