Through the first two parts of this month’s CNN Living Golf, we not only learn about Oakmont Country Club and its storied history but we’ve heard from Australian and 2006 US Open Champion Geoff Oglivy as well. Oakmont is well-known for its tough conditions, especially its greens. In the final part of this episode, Shane O’Donoghue chats with the Head Professional at Oakmont, Devin Gee, and tests the greens for himself!
We also hear from Mike Davis, USGA Executive Director / CEO, on his thoughts about preparing a golf course for a national championship. In addition to sharing his insight on course setup for an US Open, Mike Davis also reflects back on last year’s challenges and difficulties at the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay.
With Oakmont Country Club hosting the US Open for the ninth time in its history, we should expect things to go much more smoothly this year. Mike Davis even went as far as saying Oakmont is the gold standard of US Open golf. Players will be challenged to their max at Oakmont but most experts expect the winner to be a great putter and have the complete package next week, both physically and mentally. Who do you think will be crowned the 2016 US Open Champion?
