Shane O’Donoghue and CNN Living Golf continues their adventure in the desert as they explore the rich history of the Arizona town that hosts the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Taking a break from the crazy week in Arizona, Shane plays a few courses in the Scottsdale area, taking in the landscape beauty of the desert, cacti and mountain ranges.
The first stop on this day was The Boulders Golf Club, where Shane met up with old friend and golf travel writer, Joe Passov. Joe gave us a quick history lesson, including the creation of “Target Golf,” which was forced by water restrictions put into place in the area in the late 1980s. “Target Golf” refers to golf courses where golfers tee off from an island of turf, hitting it to an island of green grass on the fairway before hitting it to an island green. This feature is certainly distinctive and unique to this part of the world and is synonymous with Arizona golf.
CNN Living Golf also visits Fort McDowell, home of the Yavapai Native American tribe. Shane learns of the way that the tribe uses golf to benefit their community, using profits from golf courses, such as the We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, to fund various development programs. The day ends at TopGolf, an innovative driving range that focuses on entertainment, music, food and drinks.
