Team Europe, on paper, is definitely the favourite heading into the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. They have four of the top five players in the Official Golf World Rankings, including World Number 1, a player coming off an incredible 2014 season, Rory McIlroy.
In 2014, Rory McIlroy has had one of his best years as a golfing professional. He would win the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, in May. He would have to battle his Friday scoring woes, but once he did, he played some of the best golf we’ve seen him play. He would then win the third leg of his career grand slam, The Open Championship, followed by the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, then winning the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. He nearly won the 2014 TOUR Championship and FedEx Cup as well, but couldn’t put together a round to catch winner, Billy Horschel.
It will definitely be a challenge for whoever ends up facing Rory McIlroy. A player who has rediscovered his love for the sport of golf again and one who has the power and finesse to pull off nearly any shot. Rory made his Ryder Cup debut in 2010 (won) and was also part of the Miracle at Medinah team in 2012 (won). This will be his third Ryder Cup, representing Team Europe, with a 4-3-2 record.
