We have played two Major Championships in 2014 already and the Open Championship is just around the corner! This year, the Open Championship will return to Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake, the second oldest seaside Golf links course in England! Ahead of the year’s third Major Championship, it was announced by the R&A that golf’s oldest championship will return to Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland!
The last time the Open Championship was held at Royal Portrush was over 60 years ago in 1951, when Max Faulkner won the tournament with a total of 285. This was also the first and only time that the Open Championship was held outside of Scotland or England since the Open began in 1860! As we all know, preparations for a Major Championship is not an easy task and upgrades in infrastructure among other improvements are necessary.
The R&A estimates that the earliest Open Championship to be held at Royal Portrush will be 2019 or perhaps even a year or two later. Regardless, this is huge news for Northern Ireland and this is a venue that everyone will be looking forward to!
