Taylormade SpeedBlade Irons

The speed pocket was introduced to the golfing world by Taylormade first in the sole of the Rocketballz fairway woods and rescue clubs that promoted incredible speed and distance. The speed pocket is a deep slot behind the clubface that allows the face to flex and rebound faster therefore, increasing your ball speed and launch angle to boost your distances! In general, Taylormade’s speed pocket promises faster ball speed, higher launch angles, longer distances and quicker stops. They even put this technology into their irons, the Rocketbladez, that “changed the dyanamics of the iron business.”

Taylormade’s newest iron, the Speedblades, was announced Monday night at the BMW Championship with Sergio Garcia, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose in attendance to discuss the equipment. They all tested the equipment in front of a crowd as well with Garcia hitting a Speedblade 7 iron over 200 yards! Rose hit a Speedblade 4 iron nearly 256 yards, while Johnson got it about 271 yards! Jason Day also joined the fun, hitting a Speedblade 3 iron 280 yards. Even with the increased distances though, Tour pros are very picky and quite resistant when it comes to changing their equipment, so don’t expect to see these new irons in their bags anytime soon – not until they release a Tour version anyways!

The Speedblade irons’ speed pocket and low Centre of Gravity (CG) promotes optimal energy transfer from club-to-ball for a consistently high launch and fast ball speed. The speed pocket has been widened and lengthened from the previous model giving golfers more face area toward the toe and heel to still promote the high launching, strong ball flights even on mishits. The Speedblade irons also feature progressive clubhead shaping throughout the set. The short irons have a more slender topline and sole to promote better workability, feel and control whereas the long irons have a bigger topline to inspire confidence at address. The complimentary wedges to this iron set are the SpeedBlade Attack Wedge (50°), Sand Wedge (55°) and Lob Wedge (60°), which have a classic tour shape and blade construction.

The TaylorMade Speedblade irons are “game-improvement” irons and will be available on October 4, 2013 in eight-piece sets, the most popular probably being the 4-AW (approach wedge) set, and will retail for around USD $800.
